There's Nothing Wrong With A Sexy Cat Costume

With Halloween still fresh on our minds, many individuals faced the challenge of what to dress up as. While brainstorming ideas, the term “slutty costume” is often casually thrown around in conversation.

In the movie Mean Girls, Lindsay Lohan’s character Cady remarks, “In ‘girl world,’ Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it.” The “slutty costume” referenced here refers to when women dress provocatively on Halloween, purely for attracting the attention of the opposite sex.

The problem here is that if a woman decides to wear a sexy costume for Halloween, there is a stigma that she is “asking for it,” rather than dressing for her own self-confidence. The sexualization of women is still an issue in many aspects of today’s society, but comes around without question every year on October 31.

For example, when thinking of women on Halloween, society negatively associates the female costume to be vulgar attire that accentuates a woman’s body: sexy cat, sexy nurse, sexy firefighter... the initially innocent concept of dressing up is being capitalized on and sold in many stores today but still maintains a negative connotation.

So my question is, why can’t women wear costumes that make them feel sexy without being labeled a slut?

The idea of a sexualized costume is different in today’s society because there is a growing pride in accepting one’s body as a woman. Women should be allowed to dress up however they desire without the stigma of fulfilling someone else’s fantasy. Nowadays, many women dress sexily because it makes them feel confident and because they like the way they look, not because they are asking for anything. There is still a pressure on young women to be sexy in society, yet many of them are slut-shamed when they do.

With the expanding pride in feminism and the embrace of sexuality, women are pushing to expand the empowerment of other women and seeking to erase the stigma placed on them. Celebrities like Rihanna and Kylie Jenner embrace their womanhood and choose to dress sexy because it is their way of expressing body positivity and their own self-confidence.

Halloween should be an outlet that allows women to display their creativity and dress up as someone or something else. Furthermore, women should use Halloween as an inspiration to embrace their individuality. If a woman wants to dress sexy, let her! Especially on Halloween.
